Sunday Morning Cheer: Mortal Kombat: Legacy

MK Legacy

Back in April, we told you about the first episode of Kevin Tancharoen’s incredibly well made web series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Well, just in case you missed it (because, you know, you may have been living under a rock for the last two months), here it is again. The first season of the web series has drawn to a close, and here are all nine episodes, plus a bonus short film titled Mortal Kombat: Rebirth. Rebirth had been intended to be a reimagining of the franchise as an all-new studio motion picture; unfortunately for us (because it’s quite evident by watching these episodes that Mr. Tancharoen has the talent and vision to pull it off!), a new MK movie was denied, but the Legacy web series was green-lighted.

MK: Legacy basically offers an all-new mythology treatment, and builds backstories for many familiar MK faces. There is quite a large cast of characters here, from Jax to Johnny Cage, from Sindel to Quan Chi, and many in between, including Stryker, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, and more. Most character backstories span two episodes, with a few characters appearing in one episode only.

Whether you’ve only recently come into the fold with the new Mortal Kombat game, or used to put your quarters on the arcade cabinet to reserve next game back in the day, these films are sure to please. There are plenty of special effects, a great deal of martial arts action, and some fondly remembered lines from the game and original movie. These films are spectacularly competent, but be warned: several parts of the canonized mythology have been altered in interesting ways. Most episodes are between ten and fifteen minutes in length, so grab yourself some snacks and enjoy!

Episodes 1 & 2: Kano, Jax, and Sonya

Episode 3: Johnny Cage

Episodes 4 & 5: Kitana & Mileena

Episode 6: Raiden

Episodes 7 & 8: Scorpion & Sub-Zero

Episode 9: Cyrax & Sektor

Bonus! Mortal Kombat: Rebirth & Behind-the-Scenes
