Until Dawn Swings a Mean Machete and Goes Right for the Jugular

Until Dawn

When I made the mental leap and decided to finally spring for a PlayStation 4 last Thanksgiving, Until Dawn was the first game I bought (aside from the packed-in Uncharted Collection). In fact, I ordered the game before even finalizing the PS4 purchase, so technically I owned Until Dawn before even having a console to play it on. Continue reading

A Steamy Christmas Tradition

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Christmas may, in fact, be my favorite holiday. I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about and rating holidays, but even though I enjoy the hell out of Halloween, I get really excited each year around December. The decorations, the music (to a degree), the “cold” weather we get in Florida, the general cheery goodness. Continue reading

Backlog Redux 2014 #32 – Alien: Isolation

Alien: Isolation

In the Alien movies, characters routinely (though they’re none too happy about it) squeeze themselves into claustrophobic vents and pipes in an attempt to flush the alien out of its own turf. When they’re not doing that, they’re making their way down shoddy corridors in dim lighting, expecting a Xenomorph to descend from one of the numerous overhead vent openings at any moment and rip their head clean off. Or reach through the floor grating and pull them to a gruesome demise. Or be impaled by a skewer-like tail whipping out of the shadows nearby. The point is, they’re never ever truly safe, and now that I’ve played the game I can finally appreciate the level of terror those poor bastards must have felt. I’ll never watch those movies the same way again. Continue reading

Alien Isolation Is Too Damn Scary!

Alien: Isolation

I Guess I Asked For It…

I think I’ve finally met my match. I’ve played quite a few horror games – survival and otherwise – over the years: of course the classics Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Dead Space and all their various sequels; as well as some one- or two-offs: Siren, The Suffering, Obscure, Extermination, Alone in the Dark, The Thing, The Last of Us, Doom 3 (which I consider solidly within the realm of horror), Alan Wake, Condemned, Dead Island, and F.E.A.R., to name a few. I like horror games. But I didn’t expect that when I walked into my local game store a few weeks ago and put my cash on the counter to pre-order Alien: Isolation that I would finally be biting off more scares and screams than I could handle! 2013 Gaming Archive #23: F.E.A.R.

Nothing to Fear But Fear Itself…and Horrendous Audio, Apparently

When you have a game called F.E.A.R., there’s pretty much just one thing you expect the game to do. I mean, were a game called F.U.N. or D.U.L.L., I would certainly assume that I knew what I was getting into before I ever even started it. On that front, I suppose F.E.A.R. was a successful game (though it would have been more appropriate to call it simply C.R.E.E.P.Y.) The darkness in the game was so pervasive that it had a great gloomy mood throughout, and a few choice sections did manage to chase a cold chill right down my spine. Continue reading
